Hello Long Island!!
Welcome to the Long Green Island blog. Our hope is that this will become a community of concerned Long Islanders as much as an information source and place to discuss the issues that impact us. Long Island is a special place, wedged between the mainland and the Atlantic Ocean. At one end we are part of the sprawling suburbs of the largest city in the US and at the other end a playground for the rich and famous with some of the nicest beaches, ports and farmland in North America. Of course we do a lot of business with and enjoy the cultural riches of the metro area to our west, but we Long Islanders are a special breed and have our own issues, our own culture and our own community.
We’ve set a broad agenda of topics to start with. Some of the things that we will regularly look at:
- Business – David Pinkowitz the namesake of DCP Marketing focusing on small and medium sized businesses (SMBs). He is now turning his passion for green and sustainable causes to look at issues that confront Long Island businesses as they try to do the right thing. His first post will offer some great tips for the business owner/manager.
- Homes – While many of us are home owners, very few of us, myself (Jay Best) included, have “efficient homes.” I intent to offer regular segments that demystify home efficiency.
- Renewable Energy – There is so much sizzle right now in the renewable energy field. Jorge Quintana will help us to “find the beef.” It turns out that implementing some form of renewable energy is with the reach of many of us.
- Health – Saving the planet is certainly motivation enough for many of us, but there are real health issues at stake as well. I’ll try to explain the things that impact your health in your home, and what can be done.
- Green Life – For some, green living is not just something you do to make your home or business more efficient, it is a way of looking at the world end everything you do. Erin Quintana has created the first on Green Cuisine.
- Resources – There is of course a ton of information available out there. With the acknowledgement that we will always be incomplete, but someplace to start is better than no place, we have put together some of the resources that we have found most helpful. Please post your comments and favorites.
As broad as this is, there are obvious gaping holes – what about transportation, green industry, power generation, etc? Now’s your chance to tell us what else you would like, or to step up and start a discussion on the issues that matter to you. We’ve set a fairly wide editorial agenda, but are looking for your feedback on where to focus or what else we should report on. We invite both comments and direct email (editors@longgreenisland.com). To make this work, we need to hear from you.
Long live, the Long “green” Island,
